Patrick Deane studied English and Law at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, but since 1979 has pursued an academic career in Canada. He was appointed the seventh President and Vice-Chancellor of McMaster University in 2010, and in July 2019 will become the twenty-first Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s University. A Professor of English Language and Literature, his main scholarly interest is in the relationship between artistic production and politics, particularly in Britain during the period 1914-1945. For his services to higher education and the community, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
